See Colonel Burns tonight
July 13, 2006 in The Denver Daily NewsBy: PETER MARCUS
The name might be a mystery, but their music is anything but.
Denver-based groove band Colonel Burns will open for Garaj Mahal tonight at Quixote’s True Blue, 2637 Welton St.
Percussionist Jonathan “J-Dub” Lumly told the Denver Daily News that Colonel Burns is a band not in it for the money but solely for the music.
“Music is what we do this for,” he said. “None of us are doing it for the money at this level. It’s all about having fun.”
From the sound of it, this is a band that’s tough not to have a good time with. If dancing and shaking your booty is your thing, then Colonel Burns is your band.
From the funk sounds of Greyboy Allstars to the jazz of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Colonel Burns has molded themselves to be a funkadelic groove seduction.
They recently opened for popular jam band Animal Liberation Orchestra at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom two weeks ago and have been growing a larger and larger Denver fan base every day.
The band formed around two years ago as a creation of Lumly and sax player “Pete L.”
Their funky sound brought a keys player, guitarist, and bassist on board.
“It’s hard with bands, getting everybody on the same page,” said Lumly.
But Colonel Burns somehow seemed to mesh, probably because they are all committed to and love the music that they play.
“There’s been a great response,” said Lumly. “People can appreciate the style we do.”
Though currently attracting a jamband audience, Colonel Burns would like to invite everyone from all walks of life to check them out because it’s always a dance party when Colonel Burns is on stage.
“It’s a great feeling what we do,” said Lumly. “Our main goal is to make sure the party keeps going.”
Showtime: 9 p.m.
Tickets: $15; At the door.
